Becky returns to Nigeria from the UK to open an antiques shop. She enlists the help of her cousin Emerald who has recently graduated from a Nigerian university in Business Administration. African Movie

One day they go to purchase stock when Emerald comes across an emerald ring. A woman in the shop whom one would assume to be a sales assistant sees Emerald admiring the ring and seems intent on her having the ring, despite Emerald’s refusals. When the woman tells Emerald that she can pay whatever she likes for it Emerald succumbs and pays the woman 5000 Naira. Nigerian Movie

Later when Emerald meets with Becky she is shocked that she values the ring at 10000 Euro. It also seems strange that Becky does not recognise the description of the woman that sold the ring. Things get even stranger when Emerald falls asleep that night with the ring on. Very strange indeed!

*************SPOILERS*************

I must say it is a peeve of mine when names are spelt wrong in the credits. It happens in many films but since the credits were done so badly in this movie I thought I’d mention it here. It is especially annoying with obviously spelt names, like spelling “Geraldine” “Geraldin.” Not only is it unprofessional but it’s kinda rude and disrespectful towards the person who’s name you are misspelling, in my opinion.
______________

I must say I was disappointed after all the hype of a Majid/ Genny pairing. I was really looking forward to watching this film but it really didn’t live up to the hype AT ALL. To their credit Genevieve and Majid had electrifying chemistry and it was a good pairing, but the storyline was a let down. At first it seemed like it was going to be an excellent movie and in fact it had the potential to be a really good movie as the story was original and different to the usual Nollywood fare.

If only all the loose ends were tied up it could have been really really good. There is the possibility that there is a continuation that will tie up these loose ends but as long as I have only watched Part 1 and 2 then it was something of a flop. These are the things that we as the viewer need to understand by the end of the movie:

We see Masters of the plantation, servants, afros and bowties. What is all this in aid of? Where and when is the setting?

How does the modern day Emerald tie in with the servant Emerald except both falling in love with a married man called Maximillian?

Reincarnation? Past Life?

We need to know more about the history of the emerald ring. We know that it was a stolen family heirloom but this is not enough for the events that take place to make sense.
_____________

Apart from the issues with the holes in the story we also had the issue of very poor indoor lighting. Many scenes were dark to the point that faces only looked like shadows. It was a hot mess. There was this background music that they used in a few scenes too that was very annoying. It sounded like someone playing a computer games, like a dull pinging noise.
_____________

Majid and Genny were on point, and all their scenes together were magical. Tonto did not perform as well as she usually does. I think that this was because she was too dramatic for the understated feel of the movie. She needed to stop gesticulating so much and take a chill pill, especially being next to cool as a cucumber Genny. That kind of acting can work when you are in a Jim Iyke beating you senseless kind of setting, but for this setting it just did not work.

Halima Halima Halima… Where do I start? She isn’t too bad as in acting wise but it has come to my attention that she is always looking so hookerish. What is up with that? I am wondering if she is put in these clothes or she insists on them. She had her bazukas pushed up to her chin and the tacky tattoos on her cleavage exposed. It was just so not necessary. In one of the scenes she is wearing a thing yellow summer dress and as she is walking the material is slipping between her butt cheeks… WHY??
_____________

Overall I would not recommend this movie as it just didn’t make sense. The film ends with Max and Emerald kissing on a sofa. There is not even indication that there is anything more to the movie. If there is a continuation that addresses all these issues then that is a different story, but as it stands… THUMBS DOWN.

This is one of my favorite Nolly flicks ever. Majid and Gene were just too smoking HOT! I love how they act and convey emotions without uttering a single word.

Nolly,
I think you should add an addendum to your review now that Wild Passion 1 & 2 reveal answers to some of the questions you raised and upon which you based your rating of the movie.

The storyline was intriguing, however I think Emerald (Genny) drew the wrong conclusion from Matilda's telling of the history surrounding the Emerald ring. If anything, history repeated itself in the second incarnation of the Emerald/Max love story, precisely because the principals let FATE take its course instead of exercising their human agency to change their own destiny. Thus Emerald did not have to give up on love with her soulmate even in the second incarnation of the pairing with Max, while ceding so much power to Max's wife. Emerald could have shared with Max the story of the ring and the two of them could have better anticipated/prepared for Clarissa's evil intentions. Instead Clarissa was the one character who never suffered for her adulterous behavior nor her homicidal desires. Humans cannot allow so-called FATE to play chess with their lives.

Similarly, the Emerald could have changed the outcome of the narrative in the final scene of ACTUAL reality. Why give up on love because of dejavu. If anything dejavu should give her the confidence to avoid the pitfalls that ruined the relationships in the two dreams.

I can understand the filmmakers painful desire to give the story an unpredictable ending. But a REAL unpredictable ending would be to let the princinpals take FATE on directly to change whatever has been supposedly pre-ordained. That fighting spirit would have been a sight to see. Instead Emerald chickens out with a passive solution of non-engagement with her soulmate.

My dear Louisa I cannot submit an addendum because I cannot bear to watch Wild Passion. My body just cannot do it!!! I have no interest in watching the rest. The first part was so badly executed, that was enough for me. It could have been GREAT had it been handled more carefully but it just was not!!!

I liked the fact the movie was implying they were soulmates and that they were ALWAYS meant to be together but its kinda funny how both is past life and recent she ended up being a mistress and not his wife

I REALLY loved their pairing. I thought they mad a hot couple esp in the last 15 mins. Love it! But yea it should have gone beyond that, we dont know what happened with Max's wife, the real power of the ring, etc. Could have been better but I really liked them together.

This film made me notice Genevieve for her acting, she really stood out in this. Majid was good too and I really like the fact that they kept going back and forth between the present and the past. I think the director ran into trouble when he/she decided to make it a four-parter. This story could have been told in 90 minutes and have still been solid. I liked the ending though, I tend to like open endings to films and this was the first time I've seen it used in a Nollywood/Ghawood film. Also, I give kudos to both Ms. Nnaji and Majid Michel for their smoldering chemistry. They tried to repeat it in 'Silent Scandals' but this is the film to watch if you want to see the sparks fly.

I didn't like this movie and would have probably turned of completely if not for Majid and Genny. Most def great chemistry! You can check out my Silent Scandals review here

OMG! The ice scream scene was highly erotic. Their body language was just too hot to handle! And the scene after the love scene u could see the tension has left Emerald. Gotta love Gene...no one else could have executed the role the way she did. Emerald/Wild Passion was my #3 movies of 2009!

Hmm don't remember the ice cream scene but I do remember the chemistry between Majid and Genny. those two are always fire whether together or paired with others...

The end of part 2 Emerald and beginning of part 1 in wild passion

Nolly my dear let us leave personal issue out of this our lovely site ok you are too personal this days

Peter,

I don't get you. What was personal about Nolly's comment? I missed it. I didn't notice any 'personal issue."

Thank you Ralphina! Ask him!!!

Nolly,

I agree with your review. But the part I thought was stupid funny were the afros. Why did they need to wear them? The whole back-in-time segment, where Genevieve is a servant, made me wonder: were people wearing afros back then (whenever "back then" was)? I had to laugh!

About Tonto...
I'm beginning to wonder if her acting skills are limited. I'm not questioning if she can act, but your point about her overdoing it is right on the money. With her acting, there doesn't seem to be any in between. It's either over the top, dramatic or unassuming and lack luster. Lately, it seems that all her performances are over the top. What do yous think?

Also I have to say that the lipshine/lipgloss/lipstick choices she makes sometimes make me want to laugh and other timess make me want to shake her.

About Halima...
I have to say I was really surprised by her performance and attire. The acting was mediocre and the clothes? Well you said it.

I found alot of it just sorta not making sense to me... Its like they just threw in flashback talked about antiques and figured that would make it "deep" well it did not work. LOL

Halima I usually find alright particularly in comic roles... that is where she really excels. As for her barely there dressing, well it leaves alot to be desired. The producers obviously like her dressing like an ashewo.

As for Tonto I really liked her alot but now my love for her is slightly waning. She needs to step up her game and really analyse her characters. She is excellent at emoting, but perhaps somehwere she went on autopilot.

nice story, the worst part was where a long stupid flashback was done.god,it made no sense.only showed dat d writer didn't know what to create as a scene.it was such a shame.i saw wild passion and still there is need 4 continuation because d story is just about 2 begin.emerald was a dream so was wild passion, the reality has not been fixed because genevieve has an ultimate mission 2 perform.

A lot of it didn't make much sense to me. I couldnt even force myself to watch Wild Passion... Chemistry between Majid and Genny or no chemistry!

Ending will leave you stunned.

You mean the end of Wild Passion? I've heard it doesnt get too much better.

Emerald/Wild Passion...........ending was great.
It's turns out that Emerald (Genevieve) was having a dejavou. Tonto was the one dating Majid..............I think it was different and it needed to be paid more attention.
Overall I give it 8/10 for Genevieve and Majid's performance.
The story needed more WORK!

I must humbly disagree with you. I thought it was a bit of a mess. Nice concept... poorly executed.

The rating is 50% but I think people shoudl still watch it. I didn't like the look of the poster and was wondering why the hell Majid was wearing an Afro. It's a good film and people still watch it. The pairing was one of the best. It has a part two called Wild passion but it didn't sum it up so well either.

I would not call it a good film. It was somewhat watchable though. LOL You tell peopel tot watch then let them know the continuation didnt make sense either! LOL

Hey Nolly, this eye, is it Genny's?...........lol

Althoug the movie was kinda confusing at the begining, I really really liked the movie...... great work by Genny & Majidt as always ...... I orderd " Wild Passion" so that I can see what the end will be . I f I am to rate it, it will be 85%........ Thank you Genny, Thank you Majidt, Thank you Tonto & Halima............ I love the chemistry between Majidt and Genny. I watch this movie everyday......... Genny greetings from Namibia

There a part 3 and 4 . But the title changes to Wild Passion

Bottom line - GREAT ACTORS (Genny & Magid with great chemistry) - however not so great director/producer/writer.

If one can use these two dynamite actors and still cant come out with a hit. You need to go back on the drawing board - cos clearly u dont know what you are doing.

It is not Genny or Magids faults at all. The script was CRAP and all over the place.

Emem , Tchidi and the likes abeg save the day and use Genny & Magid in future for something better, since u amongst few directors knows how to utilise "GREAT" talent and come out with GREAT end results unlike this one here.

Some of ya peers are dancing in circles and dont know what the eff they are doing cos clearly these great actors level of talent surpass the mediocre experience they have in giving us a great end results.

Great Actors, lets just do anything and slap their faces on t he box, ppl will buy regardless.

NOOOOTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!! - We the review bloggers will call you out - u best believe. 2009 entering 2010 - its a new day. We aint playing.

MonicaB, I totally agree with you on all that you've said. Maybe some of us who watched it needed to be a little bit more open minded to get it. It's like when I watched "Hidden Treasure" and a lot of people were complaining about the language, almost shakespareanish and they thought it was an awful film, I loved it. Nolly I think ur review was a bit harsh, I am glad I didn't see your review before watching or else i wouldn't have watched. When i found your site 3weeks ago, I use it as a guide to my nollywoodwatch, some of your reviews are dead on but others, hmmm. I would give Majid and Gene 5out of 5stars even if they just stand there on film, because they command attention and they are wonderful to watch in or out of action. I would like to see them do more movies together. The ice cream scene was the hottest scene on any African scene everrrr and no one had to take off any clothes.

I must add my two cents here ... maybe I am a just a dreamer but I understood Emerald and its continuation Wild Passion... The whole idea of the storyline (and this is just my opinion here) was that it was a 'what if''. What if the two protagonists were ever to meet and pursue an affair then the result would be the demise of Majid's character (Max). So yeah, I too really wanted them to end up together and live happily ever after and all that good stuff BUT from the dreams, we all knew this wasn't the destiny of the relationship/extra-marrital affair. In the end, instead of pursuing Max in Becky's questionable party, Emerald made a sacrifice ... Some days we just cant get a happy ending but instead we get another day to create one.

The movie was quite confusing on the first part or if i must say suspense filled, but i'll try to watch the remaining parts cause it was interesting to see 2 of my wonderful actors together,Genny/Majid i love them both.Keep it up ya.

Hmmm Jumoke I dont know if I even have the patience to watch it especially knowing that it is repetitive trash!!!

Bu ha ha! Nolly, have you seen wild passion? well I did yesterday and I must say it was a waste of time as much as Emerald was. My problem is no matter how bad a movie is, I will still watch it as long as my star actress (Genevieve) is in it. The end of the movie was so stuuuuuuupid and senseless, maybe there is another part to it that I have not seen. Genevieve would always play her part well, I still loved her in the movie anyhow, my only question is, why did she accept that stupid script. Anyway I will let you watch it and pls let me know what your thoughts are. Enjoy!

Worth more than 50 percent to you, but not to me... People are free to watch. I am sure they will! AWARD KE? LMAO

emerald was a very nyce moie and it worths more than 50%,ppek rilli liked it ,let pple watch it and enjoy it.infact it derves an award..

Thanks Movie Lover. I havent seen Wild Passion either. Not sure if there is any point TBH!

Great review nollywoodforever. I really felt the same way too, the hype about the movie got me too. At the end, the movie didn't live up to expectation, terrible. Part 3 & 4 is out, of course it is title in another name as WILD PASSION sequel to Emerald. I haven't seen it yet so i really can't tell if it tied any loose ends.

There were some major disappointments in this movie. I love the story line because it is far different from the norm of a Nollywood scripts. Majid n Genny had strong connection no doubt, as if you were there and both are amazing actors. But girl Tonto was stressing it too much in her acting (especially the part where Genny told her that she had kissed Maxwell, her mouth wide open Lol!! I thought a flie woulg get in. There were not enough lights in the scenes, I wonder if these people did not a power generator or something. Max face does look like Michael J. in thriller, Lol... yeah gr8t story but a shame that they are taking forever to bring out part 3&4.

Majid and Genny were wasted. such a shame...

I couldn't have said it any better Nollywood. Gr8t summary!!! Majid never fails me, he's always into character and actually make u believe in whichever character is in. He is such an great actor, no doubt. (and just before this Majid-Genny combo, I was hoping to see them in a script together and booom! the next thing I know I was watching this preview). I mean, I was so excited when I saw them they have such gr8t chemistry its unbelievable. And I bet you there's gonna be lots of rumors that they are dating...

I agree with you Monica & Nollywoodforever, the way the movie ended was senseless. I need to know what happened to Majid's wife and if Majid eventually married Genny. The dream part two was confusing to me, they need to bring some element of sense into the movie by way of a part 3 or something. However, Genny did an excellent Job with her part and Majid did same. I give them both their praise regardless of the movie flaws.

Monica even if there is a part 3 I don't think it can really make up for the mess they have made of 1 and 2... some elements of sense should have been brought in earlier... anyway we shall see!

I agree this movie had potential of being great but its just didn't make it there. They cast was perfect and acted how they were directed.

I love and will continue to love Majid and Genny but it just shows how even brilliant actors can cock things up if they are not directed properly.

I must agree with nollywoodforever's review... kudos to the reviewer... The movie was unique and I do like the chemistry between a young Majid and a well-seasoned Genny however, they cannot set up plots and not follow them through. There must be a part three (not a 4,5 or 6..just a 3) to make sense of the dream/the ring/the concept that adultery appears in both the afro-wig-Emerald and modern-day Emerald's life. Come on Nollywood, this movie could be the awakening to the carbon-copied movies i have been plagued with these last few months... I hope a well thought out Part 3, with no cliff-hangers and tied in plots, is currently on its way...

well nolly u seem 2 hav said it all...i was really lookin 4wrd 2 a wonderful storyline wen i saw majid/genny in front...i only hope dat nt only is ther a concludin part 2 dis, but a concludin part dat actually ties up all d loose parts n correlates wit wat we'v seen so far...bc trust me, nollywood can bring a 3rd n 4th part dat is more askew dat wat we'v previously seen...

Nolly, the part that I was referring to was when Max was killed. Emerald stumbled on the body and picked up the murder weapon, and his wife happened to see her holding that and accused her of murder.....

There has to be a part 3 to this movie. There has to be an ending... I finally saw the couch scene you are referring to. There has to be a ending....

wild passion(emerald 3)-wacth it

No thank you. But you enjoy!

Yes I saw the part where the guy kills Max but I didn't see any accuse of murder bit and I got the DVD this time!
