Nigerian Carnival in London

The Nigerian Carnival UK will be held on 8th October 2011 in London. Nollywood Actors will feature although names have not yet been announced. The exciting thing about the event is that it has been brought to light that even people who are not Nigerians dance to Nigerian music, and also watch Nigerian Nollywood movies.  An arena for a Nollywood movie section has been set up and is being coordinated by the Nollywood movie channel, Sky and a company called J2 Consult, so revellers will get to see some of their favourite actors and actresses from the Nollywood industry up close and personal.

The event aims at educating and enlightening people about Nigerians, aiming to showcase the culture and commercial vibrancy of Nigeria, in a bid to further launch Nigeria into the international mainstream and defeat negative stereotypes.

Explaining why he founded the Nigerian Carnival UK, founder Kashif Jones-Laguda stastes,

“It’s just the passion I have for culture, and the fact that there are so many Nigerians who were born in this country, who don’t really know much about their roots. Also because my observation is that some of the young people lack that connection to their roots.”

Jones-Laguda explains that the Nigerian Carnival is not just a music and dance event,

“Nigerian Carnival is not a concert and it is not a jamboree. It is an educative cultural event, because we have a section for children where they will be carrying out a language workshop and drumming workshops. Also there are traditional games and they’ll be taught about the way we used to dress in Africa and our traditions, so it is not based on just dancing and playing music. This year there will be a masquerade from the eastern part of Nigeria, Atilogwu. Everyone is invited including non-Nigerians to attend the event. Every friend of Nigeria is welcome.”
