Synopsis:

After Ben’s father dies he and his mother approach Chief George his uncle for his father’s shares in the family company so that he can continue his studies abroad. His uncle refuses but then in the same breath answer’s the phone in their presence to grant his son the sum of £6000 for his accommodation in the UK. He claims that his stinginess towards his nephew is borne out of a desire to turn him into a “real man.” Nigerian Movie

*************SPOILERS*************

What sort of irresponsible mother would allow her son to go to New York, one of the most expensive cities in the world, armed only with a bible? He cannot work so it is left up to the “grace of God” to find him food and accommodation. Seriously how is he meant to survive without turning to illegality or begging? He has no tuition fees to be able to resume his studies, so what is he really going there to do? Now if we are told that he has a green card or he has arranged to stay with friends then that is a different story, but there is no mention of such. Nigerian Movie

Chief George’s behaviour is shocking. He sends his drunk and wayward son Tony money but then leaves his nephew, who is clearly ambitious, hardworking and with goals, stranded and without the cash flow to finish his studies.
_____________

Ben returns home after 5 years and rolls up to his mama’s crib with a brand new car. His mother admonishes him and tells him, “that was not necessary,” and points to the impressive array of cars that already stand in the compound that belonged to his father. HOLD UP!!! There are at least 5 luxury cars parked in the compound. Why on earth they were not sold to fund John’s studies? Instead his useless mother sent him to the US empty handed.

It is when he returns that Chief George offers Ben his father’s shares in the company, 800 Million Naira. What is the point of offering him vasts sums of money when he is now flossing? When he needed it you were stalling and talking about making him a man. The guy could have at least just paid Ben’s tuition. Its all very well that he came back with a degree and businesses in the US but in reality how likely was that to happen? In reality the guy would have ended up turning to crime, in jail or selling his ass. Nonsense.
_____________

Not only does Chief George become Father Christmas but he now turns his favour to Ben as opposed to Tony his son. There is one thing I don’t get about this part of the story. We see Ben going out to secure contracts for Chief Ben after Tony messes it up. I thought that Ben was working for himself. That is what he declared when he returned from the US, that he was starting up his own outfit and wouldn’t be working for the family company. It is like that part of the story was dismissed without explanation and we see Ben working for the company and not for himself. Was this the story? Or was something lost in translation?

The story was so predictable in that after Chief George altered his will to oust his son, he goes and dies, not only does he does but he dies the SAME FRIGGING DAY. I mean I knew they were going to have him die, but to die as he leaves the office from changing the will. I thought that that was too much and lacked creativity and originality.

The movie does not end so we can deduce from that that there will be a continuation. I was surprised that there was no sizzle between Mercy and Jim or Mercy and John but I guess that is not surprising since she was not supposed to be into Jim romantically and the fact that John was supposed to be a workaholic concerned with little else.
_____________

Conclusion:

I would recommend the movie if you have nothing better doing. It was definitely watchable and I did enjoy it to an extent. On the downside I felt that certain aspects of the story did not make sense and were not well developed. In the beginning it is made out that Chief George is trying to leave his brother’s family in poverty and then the next minute he is showing great generosity. The story that he wanted to turn his nephew into “a man” did not ring true. Why then did he not want to make his own son “a man?” On the plus side the movie moved at a pretty good pace throughout until the latter part of part 2 at this point it got a bit draggy. Anyway watch and see!

I think the title scent of a woman has been used in a hollywood movie before but that is not bad of itself. Maybe I will give this a try but the holes in the story from this review are just too much.

Oh really I haven't heard of it before. It isn't a bad watch. I suppose if you are not analysing closely some of these issues may pass you by.

And by the way, watched the AMMA 2010 last nite and oh, what a waste? The event was soooo disorganised, boring and oh u name it, The MCs, Rita came ther only at the begining and then she disappeared. then this guys who was co-emceeing with Rita was just a joke, Then Rita reappeared again after 2 hrs and this guy couldn't even give the a chance to talk. oh……

The sound was very poor we couldn't even see the performers closer. Its only cos I know Omaomi's song else I couldn't have known it was her singing

The cameraman couldn't even show us the audiance, oh aay the thing was just a total disaster……… puke,,,,,,,,,,

NOLLYWOOD WRITERS NEED TO STICK TO THE STORY THEME I LOVE WATCHING YUR MOVIE BUT I THINK TO MANY OF THESE PICTURES STRAY AWAY FROM THE POINT. IN REAL LIFE THE NEPHEW WOULD NOT WANT ANY THING TO DO WITH HIS UNCLE BUT HERE HE IS BACK FROM UNIVERSITY AND HIS GOOD OFR NOTHING UNCLE IS MAKING HIM DIRECTOR OF THE COMPANY AFTER RUEFUSING HIM ASSISTANCE WITH HIS FEES FOR STUDIES. I ALSO AGREE WITH A PREVIOUS COMMENT HIS MOPTHER SHOULD HAVE SOLD SOME OF THE CARS IN THE YARD TO HELP WITH HIS TUITION.

    • You make a good point. In order for Ben to truly forgive his uncle then the uncle would at least apologise and admit that what he did was wrong… As well as give a good explanations for his action… Which he didn't do.

Why include that part in the movie of the uncle being a greedy selfish man if they were going to drop it the next minute and not follow through? Very strange.

  5. Adwoa says:

Joke of the day…………………"get your mouth of me" that was halirous. OMG…………………….did Chief have to die that way???????????????????? Bernard Hilary says he's not interested in his father's business but he spends allllllll his time at George Grup of Company. I really didn't get that.

Three questions………..why didn't mama Ben sell some of his husband's for Ben? 2) why didn't chief apologies to Ben for what he did to him? 3) why did chief seem to be a selfish man and he turns around to make his nephew the Executive Director of the company?

The story dragged for toooo long and it make it a bit boring to watch. It took me two days to finish it. It was just okay…………..Jim Iyke and Patience are always the evil people………………I really tink they should be challenge a bit more.

    • Nolly says:

I totally agree with you on Bernard saying that he is taking care of his own enterprise and then we never see him at his own business. You said you didn't care then why are you so involved and going to all lenghths to get control of the company?

The end of the movie just got more and more ridiculous by the minute LMAO

I don't even know where to begin. First of all 4 parts??? No reason aat all. All the actors played their roles well, but the storyline was just plain wacK. It was almost too predictable. That's it! No more movies for me this year until the supposed "blockbusters" r releasd. And it only took 4 tries to finish watching the movie SHM

    Hi,

First if all I would like to thank you for all the reviews that you put up. They are really helpful when trying to find an african movie to watch. However I disagree with you on this review. Scent of a Woman the continuation is soo much better it is called Power of a Kiss btw . Actually I watched that part without watching the prequel and i thoroughly enjoyed it and understood everything. Maybe if you check that out you might enjoy it!

Thanks a lot and God Bless!

    • Nolly says:

Thanks for coming by TC. I have seen Power Of a Kiss, it concluded the movie for me but it still doesn't change the fact that there were alot of things in the movie that could have been handled in a much better way. Not to say that I didn't enjoy the movie, there were just alot of things that were detracting from the enjoyment!
