Mercy works for her mother’s company as do Angel and Irene. Mercy carries herself with class. A trait instilled in her by her mother. She always commands respect and refuses to be a plaything for men. The friends that she works with however are not so virtuous. Mercy takes exception with the way that Irene manipulates her lovers into financially supporting her; seeing it as immoral and deceptive. Irene feels judged and lashes back that she is simply surviving as she does not have a family to help her out when times are hard like Mercy does. Angel is more reserved but similar to Irene comes from an underprivileged background with a younger brother to support through university so when the chance comes to embark on an affair with Mercy’s father she does not hesitate to take the chance. Mercy Johnson plays a woman called Mosun and Rita Dominic plays a woman called Preye. They are best friends from childhood into adulthood. The root of Preye’s wild and promiscuous behaviour is the sexual abuse she endured as a child in the hands of her uncle. It is as though by taking control of her sexuality and becoming a seductress in such a dominant way she is trying to wash away that feeling of being powerless as a child. By contrast Mosun is the complete opposite to Preye, disgusted by the idea of casual sex and dowdily dressed to downplay her sexuality. She too has been a victim of child sexual abuse at the hands of her step-father.

Their uncle does not want them to go to school not wanting to waste money on children who are not his own. Uche ends up sleeping with uncle because he promises to send her to school if she does so. This one act sends her life (and the lives of others) on a downward spiral.
