Steph and Winnie are sisters back from studying at Harvard in the USA to run their father’s company. Steph is the “bad egg” with her incessant drinking, smoking and waywardness. Winnie on the contrary is the favoured more sensible daughter. Samuel, the Igwe’s son has a girlfriend whom he met while studying in The States that he has brought home to introduce to his parents. He is determined to marry her, but his parents are wholly against the situation, stating that not only does she bear the unfortunate title of “osu” but that in addition her class is not befitting to their own.

We find out the Ron has been married to Joy for five years and that she helped to retain him with the help of a witchdoctor AKA Astrologist. Yes in this movie they were calling the witch doctor an astrologer! Life is pretty much hunky dory until Anita comes back o the scene declaring undying love for Ron and causing mayhem in the process… and so the drama begins!

Kelvin ends up marrying his wife Dora after she tells him that she is pregnant after casually sleeping together a few times. He does not love her but wants to face up to his responsibilities as a man and make an “honest woman” of her. His best friend Nelson knows that he is pining for his one true love that he has recently split up with and advises him against the marriage seeing it as a recipe for disaster.

Before the Vow tells a bride and groom’s story the day before the wedding. We are switched between two scenarios; the groom and his groomsman and the bride and her bridesmaid. The fact that the groom picks up a prostitute the night before his wedding and the fact that the bride seems more excited by her future husband’s groomsman suggests things may not be as rosy as they seem.

Mercy plays Loveth, a wayward wife that cheats while her husband is out of the country on business. Chiege plays Sylvia a repeat husband snatcher, while Henry Opara plays Benson, someone who appears to be and upstanding member of the church but who in fact has a plot which is less than ethical. He seduces another member of the congregation, who is an “old cargo” desperate for marriage. He promises her a life partnership, but in fact plans to bleed her dry financially without ever actually making it up the altar.

She does not like him on first meeting as he is arrogant and boastful, however on her grandmothers encouragement agrees to go on a date with him. It is a disaster and her disdain for him is intensified; he continually ogles other women and insists on swigging from a bottle of whisky throughout the date. After this date he proposes marriage to her and she refuses. He is outraged at the rebuff and she receives a letter from him to say that unless she marries him the debt that her father owed his for the land that their house is built on will need to be paid in the coming months. Camila was not aware that her father owed his before his death and is distraught upon the devastating news.

The overall message was good and it was a positive thing that they were trying to bring HIV into the open forum, but I was highly disappointed by the film, having hyped it up in my mind before watching it. The scaremongering was ridiculous.
