Dillion and Benita have been married for 4 years but have not managed to have children despite both being checked by the doctors and found to be perfectly fertile. Dillion cannot bear the shame of childlessness any longer and so gives Benita and ultimatum. She has nine months to bear him a child or he will throw her out and bring in a new wife to carry out her wifely “duty.” She is in a tough situation because he has given her this ultimatum yet at the same time does not want to sleep with her? So how on earth is she meant to conceive a child?

They are best friends from childhood into adulthood. The root of Preye’s wild and promiscuous behaviour is the sexual abuse she endured as a child in the hands of her uncle. It is as though by taking control of her sexuality and becoming a seductress in such a dominant way she is trying to wash away that feeling of being powerless as a child. By contrast Mosun is the complete opposite to Preye, disgusted by the idea of casual sex and dowdily dressed to downplay her sexuality. She too has been a victim of child sexual abuse at the hands of her step-father.

The maid is unemployed and her oga is drowning himself in self pity. It is only when he sees his wife out of the street pregnant and in another man’s arms that he decides to rehire the maid. His main concern is that publicly he will become an object of derision, so his plan to rehire the maid holds a more sinister motive. He wants to impregnate her to prove his “manliness.”

Roland has promised Sandra marriage and although he does not really mean it his mother is pressuring his to find a wife, and so he turns up at Sandra’s house to use her for the task of appeasing his mother’s anxieties.
