Ene (Angela Okorie) and Frieda (Mercy Johnson) are best friends who have fallen out. In the meantime Frieda seduces her Ene’s boyfriend who is a government official. This causes an even huger rift in the friendship, with two teams of friends posted against each other, which causes all and out war with each team trying to get the better of the other.

The basic premise of the story was not believable as Yul Edochie and Angela Okorie have minimal chemistry so it seemed unbelievable to me that Mario would want to fight for their relationship especially considering that he had way more chemistry with Freda and was creeping around with her on more than one occasion. If Ene had other redeeming qualities that would make sense, such as wit, intelligence, connections or money but she was pretty much a razz street girl on Mercy’s level so what gives?

The movie was badly edited. There were too many pointless drawn out scenes which made the movie drag. There is only so much yansh you can see shaking before it gets tedious and boring. The party scenes in part 2 were never ending. It was almost as if they didn’t know what to put in the movie and thought what the hell! Let’s just throw in some potbellied dudes and some naked girls shaking their asses, that’ll entertain most. Erm no! Not for 10-15 minutes straight. If we wanted to see this bullshit we would just go to a club and not watch a movie.

Women in Nollywood

Generally when a woman is involved in a movie production I have higher expectations, be it directing, producing or writing. We have the likes of Vivian Ejike, Emem Isong, Mildred Okwo, Remi Ibinola, Ruth Kadiri and Uche Jombo doing great things. More times than not where these women are involved you will be in for a great viewing experience, but not where Uche Nancy is involved. I don tire for this Uche Nancy. All of these movies that she is involved in are just utter crap. Let me not mince words. So far the movies I’ve seen that she has had a hand in are this one, The Enemy I see, Blue Blood and The Lamb. I swore after the Lamb to run if I saw her name again but somehow I missed it on this. Lawdhammercy how can a woman be involved in such anti woman nonsensical drivel driven stories (THE LAMB ESPECIALLY)? She used to be known for her great costuming work now she is going to be known for crap stories and producing crap movies. My advice is stick to what you are good at or at least find a great mentor. Nolly has spoken.

I would not recommend this movie. Not only was it boring but the story was wishy washy. The movie doesn’t even end at the end of part 2 and I wouldn’t care enough to watch the continuation because in 2 hours of what I already watched not much happened. The story did not have a clear focus and was pointless. Mercy Johnson was good as was the banter between some of the girls which kept me entertained on some level. Nevertheless best to give it a miss.

NB: I believe that perhaps this movie was also called Gallant babes because they kept exclaiming that throughout and I know there is a movie called Glaant Babes. Can anyone else verify?

  1. Thank’s to NOLLYWOOdD to send me much videos of my country , the great Nigeria.I think that we make the best movies in all africa. It’s why we won 50 nominations at the 2012 African Movies Awards. The nigerians actress Tonto dikeh, Chika Ike, Angela Okorie etc… are more pretty than Halle Berry or Jennifer Hudson. I hope that one day, our movies will be seen in all the world, in America and in Europe.

Gallant Babes is an experiment towards an X-rated movie, a typical introduction to what according to my lecturer, Dr. Ambrose Uchenunu, calls sex-pliotatation. Be that as it may, Uche Nancy and Michael Jaja especially tried. In Cinematography; the picture quality and scene shots is a credit that they can brag of. Added to it is Mercy Johnson being in character and giving the audience what they want. I would not recommend this movie for adolescents and people below tenage age; even elders. Initially, I was expecting to see the warning; movie may contain violence, obscene language and pictures, but to my surprise and alas, the FBI warning. Is the copyright owner protecting his own lust and gains against his integrity and the protection of the audience’s morality? Was media message and content censorship bypassed at the risk of the country’s socio-cultural principles? Have they forgotten the male gaze? Is the promoting of feminism more important than safe-guarding the image of the Nigerian woman? Doesn’t it shows that we are picking and borrowing from cultures that is not even ours?
